Problem with appearance of Gradient used in Wallpaper design when Wallpaper in use.
Published on September 8, 2009 By Driftdust In New Users

Hi, I used a gradient in my design but it appears to have fine lines visible which are flowing in the direction of the gradient - is this normal? If not, and I hope its not normal, how might I best rectify this?  Also, I would attach a copy of the image but I don't know how to on here.

Image size: 1280 x 1024 pxls  Res.72pxls

Thank you in anticipation.

It happens, best way is to have 3 layers of the gradient with one of each of the other 2 layers offset about 5 - 30 degrees in  the direction of the gradient desired ie one to the left and the other to the right. I assume that you have sufficient colours selected already.

Oh thank you very much, I'll try that.

Do a layer copy then cnrtl click the image to select it and delete the copied image then add a gaussian blur effect to the selected image area- besure to place this layer over your gradient... or you can just add the blur to the gradient depending on how you want it to look... same with how you want colors to be used also with adjustments for the selected image or gradient and such.

Really depends on just how you feel you want things to look smooth or smooth and crisp with some details.

Thank you so much for your help - I'm going to do some experimenting.  Cheers!

There are many ways to defeat gradient banding, a quick google should net you some pretty good results.

If this is any help.......... add some noise and blend with soft light. Noise is in the "filter" menu at the top, and you can change the blending by clicking the drop down box at the top of the layers pallette, it usually says "normal" change it to "soft light".

Might help........

Thank you all for your help...I've gone back to my wallpaper to start fixing it & I cannot open any of it's layers to work on the Gradient one...all I am seeing in the Layers Pallette is just 1 layer displaying the finished image & it is labelled 'Background' & it is 'partially locked'.  What can I do to work on/access/unlock all the original layers.  I saved my image as JPG.

Thank you in anticipation.

It needs to be saved as a PSD file to keep the layers, saving as a JPG flattens it by merging all the layers.
